Serena Williams is set to make a stunning return to professional tennis in West Kensington this month, after confirming she will compete in the doubles at the HSBC Queen’s Club Championships.

The appearance marks her first competitive outing since the 2022 US Open, where she signalled she was “evolving away” from the sport.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion will enter the tournament as a wildcard, partnering rising Canadian player Victoria Mboko. Their entry adds an unexpected burst of star power to this year’s Championships, which run from 6 to 21 June and traditionally serve as a key warm-up to Wimbledon.

Williams’ decision to return immediately transformed the Queen’s Club event into one of the headline moments of this year's tennis calendar. Her presence is expected to draw significant attention to the tournament which already features the pairing of Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu.

“The biggest thing I’ve missed is the atmosphere and the travel," Williams said. "I’ve done it literally my whole life, so when you stop doing something you’ve been doing ever since you can remember, I think you take it for granted.

“Now there are different things that I can try to experience in a different way that I’ve never been able to do before, and to do it with my family."

The 44-year-old, who gave birth to her second child in 2023, is excited to have her family cheering her on from the sideline as both children will get to see her play in West London.
The Queen’s Club Championships, long associated with elite men’s tennis, have expanded in recent years to include a growing women’s programme.

For local fans, the announcement offers a rare chance to see one of the greatest players in tennis history competing on their doorstep. Williams has not played competitively in the UK since her final Wimbledon appearance in 2021, and her return to London adds a compelling new chapter to a career that has shaped the sport for more than two decades. Hermatch is due to take place on Tuesday (9 June).

The American-Canadian wild card pairing will face third seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe in the opening round of the women’s doubles.

The Championships take place at the Queen’s Club, Palliser Road, W14, with tickets now on sale.
